Path to the EcoPrint Summit: Highlighting Sustainability Sentiment in Print

Research EcoPrint and Highcon form the basis of the initial report and first webinar as the countdown to the Summit begins EcoPrint, in partnership with Highcon, is highlighting the results of its recent survey on sustainability and print technology, as well as insights from the accompanying webinar in which EcoPrint’s Marcus Timson and Highcon’s Simon Lewis discussed the survey results.

The aim of the research was to gather meaningful data on the green policies, challenges, strategies, and future prospects of businesses within the print and production industries.

The findings revealed that while companies and individuals are often well-intentioned, the information available to those working to achieve their sustainability goals can be inconsistent, misleading, or uncertain, resulting in ineffective tools for businesses planning Net Zero targets.

Statistics Snapshot

  • 70% are actively searching for alternative sustainable materials in their production

  • 34% said that they are not familiar with all the sustainable technology on offer to them

  • 22% of respondents cited a lack of information from within the print industry

  • 26% note a lack of government direction

  • 53% of companies expect their business to be making sustainability-driven decisions in five years’ time

  • 62% of respondents would be interested in participating and/or attending an event 100% focused on sustainable print technology production

Marcus Timson, co-Founder, EcoPrint, comments, “The drive to become a more sustainable and ethical business has been given fresh impetus during the global COVID crisis and more recently with the energy crisis. Becoming more sustainable is not just an ethical thing that is right to do, it is moreover a very sensible business decision as is borne out in the results of this survey.”

Simon Lewis, VP of Marketing, at Highcon Systems, adds, “Once upon a time, when there were no clear rules and no clear targets, taking discernibly sustainable actions was a reasonable source of competitive differentiation. To the 29 converter respondents who said that being sustainable is differentiating and helps win new customers, I am sorry to disappoint you.

That’s so last decade – unless you’re going to be at the absolute forefront. Yes, it was encouraging that slightly more people said that they would be more sustainable in their business because it’s the right thing to do. And some of those are the same people. But why are only ~60% saying that it’s right?!”
